Sonic the Hedgehog is a very important part of my life, something my real-life friends understandibly don't really get, so where do I turn to to feed my weird obsession with this franchise? To the internet, of course.

Funny

The Shadow Fandub

Everyone knows the fandubs, everyone loves the fandubs. The original Sonic Adventure 2 one will forever be iconic (yes, I can quote Eggmans announcement in full), but I also really love the newest one of Shadow the Hedgehog. It's just really well executed all around and I love the narrative the voice actors come up with on the fly. The devil is also one of my favorite characterisations that ever came from the dub series.

The Silver Campaign

Another pretty essential one; I can't begin to count how often I have watched this video since it came out. Kind of disorienting to watch at first, especially if you don't know Lythero and/or aren't familiar with Sonic 06. It's basically a highlights reel of a twitch playthrough, intersperced with lots and lots of really high quality animations of the bits the hosts are doing. It's great.

Sonic Forum Simulator

This is a fan edit of a wayneradiotv stream where he and his friends show off the fake Sonic forum they made where they roleplay as kids on the internet in 2008. I'm too young to have been on these forums myself, and I still found everything about this hilarious. If you were a Sonic fan back in the day, this will probably be very nostalgic to you (but also still hilarious).

Jehtt

Another very popular dub channel, but this time with short meme videos. I have just linked one of the ones I find the funniest here.

High-quality autism

This category's name is a reference to a comment under a Cybershell video, I just wanted to make that clear to avoid possible confusion.

What the Hell are Chao?

One of Cybershell's most watched videos and for good reason. Not only is it funny and well-researched as always, but the loremaster gives us a very thorough rundown of everything you could ever want to know about Chao: From how the concept was originally developed to how to best raise your Chao, including a lecture on Chao genealogy. It also introduced me to the Chao Viewer, an in-browser program where you can create your own little chao by experimenting with Chao genetics (including illegal ones). You will come away from this video knowing what a Neutral/Fly/Fly Chao looks like and why, and I think that's knowledge we all should have.

Netlore Ep.3: Ken Penders

Even though Netlore is technically a podcast, this episode still counts because of all the visuals they show in this video. Another Cybershell entry; this time he takes a look at Ken Penders' involvement with the Archie Sonic Comics, together with his co-host Bernievidz. I like this video because in my opinion Penders gets too much hate from the fandom and Cybershell presents the topic in a way that makes clear that, yes, his artistic takes on the Sonic Characters range from passable looking to hilarious nightmare fuel, but that he is not evil or irreperably harmed the franchise with his lawsuit against Archie, which some people actually seem to believe. But it should still be a very interesting video to you if you are involved in the fandom, even if you dislike Penders or know nothing about him.

What is it about Sonic?

This is a question I have asked myself a lot, since I usually know why I like or don't like something, but with Sonic it's somehow different: I just can't tell what it is about this franchise that fascinates me so much and makes me spend so much time of my life thinking about it. One of the usual takes is that it has to do with the character designs and that is definitely part of it, but I have never liked anything purely for its aesthetics, so it must have more to do with the characters themselves. Pariah (who also makes other great videos analysing the stories of Sonic games) is the first one who has put his finger onto something I feel like, at least his analysis of Sonic's character and why it works makes a lot of sense to me on an emotional level. I'm not going to spoil it because you should definitely watch this video yourself, plus the comments under this one add a lot to the discussion.

Playthroughs

Sonic Heroes

My favorite Sonic Heroes playthrough is by Regular Pat, who usually does Kingdom Hearts stuff (which I know nothing about), but also plays Sonic Games from time to time. I really like his style and think he's pretty funny. He does talk a lot about Kingdom Hearts with his chat though, but I was still pretty entertained in these moments because KH is just such a ridiculous franchise.

Sonic Forces

Sonic Forces is a baaad game, but just like Sonic 06 it is a trainwreck I can't look away from. Watching these two guys create the their own Ian Jr. is pretty funny from the start and the pure gold outfit at the end is just peak fashion. A very funny game if you like so-bad-it's-good content, but this playthrough will probably be more fun to watch than playing it yourself.
